Two barrels made of this first Syrah produced from grapes grown on the Black Bank Hill vineyard, and a wonderful start to this special varietal from the exceptional 2020 vintage. Syrah from nowhere but Niagara terroir. A wild fermentation and 18-months élevage in French oak, prior to bottling, and 1-year in glass prior to release.
Still in development upon release in May 2023, but already providing great pleasure and showing its complexity. A combination of savoury herbs, floral notes and dark red fruits. Dark plum, sour dark cherry, pomegranate, mint and Provençal herbs, lavender, sage, allspice and Christmas-cake spices, dark chocolate.
The wine shows a tremendous balance between its components, revealing the supple and silky texture of the vintage. A wine to savour with great potential for improvement with additional cellaring.
Harvested by hand-picking 8 October 2020. Fermented dry to <2 g/L residual sugar and 13.5% alcohol, followed by 20-months élevage in previously used French oak. Bottled with a light filtration 4 July 2022. 48 cases made.
